About Learn Do Share

Learn Do Share (LDS) is a grassroots innovation engine; a combination of events, labs and peer production. We are a community for open collaboration, design fiction and social innovation.

The three words LEARN, DO and SHARE embody our philosophy: we learn from everyone. we do by prototyping. we share what we learn.

Our events and labs are gatherings for ad-hoc groups to meet, ideate and work out concepts for a common good.

Our peer production cycles help groups stay together to co-create prototypes of their collective imaginations. The most prominent are Caine’s Arcade, My Sky Is Falling, and The BUKE.

Our books, documentaries and projects are carried forth by our participants to inspire other people to do the same.

Our Learn Do Share methodology and framework, which we like to call an OS (operating system) is being adapted by Universities, organizations and makerspaces as a tool to help tackle wicked problems by harnessing storytelling, play, designing thinking and collaboration. Over the last four years, we’ve collaborated with Jorgen van der Sloot and FreedomLab to design and prototype a social innovation lab to explore solutions for complex problems. The Learn Do Share lab runs at our events as well as having been staged for Columbia University, the UN, the City of Los Angeles, UNICEF and the Danish Government.

Learn Do Share heads to London

We’re thrilled to announce that Learn Do Share heads to London on Sept 5th and 6th for the first time. We’re partnering with Ravensbourne for what is shaping up to be an exciting program.

The London event’s theme is FUTURE CITIES.

The goal of Learn Do Share LONDON is to reflect the fact that the city is a leading tech and creative hub; a place for innovative thinkers. We also know that London is one of the greatest cities in the world – but it is facing tough challenges in the future. How can we harness technology and storytelling to make a difference? Quite simply, Learn Do Share will give thinkers and doers the space to share ideas and find ways to bring good ideas to life to help make London a better place to live and work.

Thank you NYC

Learn Do Share NYC was a smashing success! Thanks to all the volunteers, speakers and participants who help to make it a wonderful event.

Over 300 people joined us over the course of the day. Our theme was DIY Urbanism and through a series of talks, workshops, hacks and labs participants collaborated in a variety of activities focused on improving urban environments.

From the program…

Join us as we explore how local communities are embracing DIY culture to change their neighborhoods. Every year hundreds of grassroots projects are initiated in an effort to reimagine and re-create the city. From transportation to health to education to disaster preparedness, citizens are rolling up their sleeves and coming together to design the world around them. At Learn Do Share NYC we’ll explore how collaborative action, design thinking, storytelling, play and technology can be used as tools for civic engagement and social good.

See you next year!

DIY days has a new name

After seven years and 20 events, diy days is shedding its name. Over the years the event has grown into a global community that has producers in 30 countries. When I co-founded the event in 2008, it was focused on enabling a new emerging creative class of storytellers. At that point the philosophy of “diy” was at the core of our efforts. The events and focus of the community was on how storytellers fund, create, distribute and sustain. And while these needs still exist the event has evolved, moving from pure entertainment and into a mix of purposeful storytelling and play. Open design has taken a center stage as the event as we’ve grown into a social sandbox that encourages rapid prototyping that works to move ideas into collaborative action.

Over the last few years diy days has incubated, accelerated and supported a variety of projects and platforms focused on social good.

Caine’s Arcade (2011)
Lyka’s Adventure (2012 & 2014)
My Sky is Falling (2013)
Project Daniel (2014)

We began to realize that we were NOT doing it ourselves but in fact we’re doing it together. So after some careful thought we’ve decided to rename the event Learn Do Share.

The Learn Do Share ecosystem consists of

An open knowledge base
A series of publications
Global Events & Labs
A project accelerator
Open collaborative tools

We’re always looking for collaborators and would love to hear about what your working on and what you need.

See you in London this Fall!

Welcome to the new Learn Do Share

We’ve been working hard at Reboot Stories to build prototypes that harness storytelling, play, design and collaboration. Learn Do Share is one such prototype focused on open collaboration, design fiction and social innovation. An online community and resource that is directly connected to our global diy days events. At its core we see Learn Do Share as a design principal. It serves as a foundation for diy days and the prototypes that we build. It is our attempt to move ideas to action.

learn do share #4

With no resources, just passion and purpose an amazing group of people created another book, and we remain stunned by the impact of open collaboration.

Learn Do Share is a book, a documentation, reflection and learning resource about narrative experiments and social innovation efforts ventured at diy days New York City. We explore participatory systems, collaborative spaces, share culture, and self-propelled creativity. Written and designed by volunteers, the aim is to spread storytelling, empathy and collaboration as a way to “learn, do and share,” and to have a positive effect on creative communities within an open design environment both locally and globally.

Diy days is a social innovation hub and a vehicle for creative sustainability. It is an internationally roving gathering for those who create, free to participants and run by volunteers in the spirit of collaborative culture. Reboot stories designs these gatherings around sharing ideas and resources that help creators to fund, create, distribute and sustain their work. its experimental elements are attempts to explore the future of co-creation embedded in talks, networking and collaborative activities that are meant to spark the imagination of many.
